HEALTHY HOMES AND WEATHERIZATION PROGRAM

The MAAC Project Healthy Homes Department has been providing weatherization services to low-income families in San Diego County since 1978. The goal of the Weatherization Program is to reduce heating and cooling cost for low income families by improving the energy efficiency of their homes and ensuring their health and safety.

MAAC Project’s Healthy Homes Department works in partnership with San Diego Gas & Electric Energy Team, Richard Heath & Associates, the Department of Community Services and Development (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program & Department Of Energy Program), San Diego Housing Commission and San Diego Healthy Homes Collaborative.

In 2007, MAAC’s Healthy Homes Department provided weatherization services to 1840 households. First priority is given to elderly persons, persons with disabilities and families with children.

Weatherization services are available to home owners and renters whose households incomes do not exceed an amount equal to sixty percent of the State median income.

Households who are income qualified will have a Weatherization Assessor come oWeatherization Teamut to the
home and conduct a complete home assessment. During the assessment all combustion appliances will be checked to ensure that no health and safety hazards exist. If a health and safety hazard does exist this household will be given first priority. If needed furnaces, water heaters and stoves are either repaired or replaced. A carbon monoxide alarm will also be installed,

Once the assessment is completed an appointment will be scheduled and a certified work crew will come and install infiltration reduction measures which include caulking, window repair/ replacement, weather-stripping, switch & outlet gasket, door repair/ replacement, attic insulation, compact fluorescent lamps and microwaves. Water saving measures are also installed. These measures include low-flow showerheads (regular and hand held), faucet restrictors and water heater blankets.

After work is completed a certified quality assurance inspector will come out to inspect that the work that has been done to the satisfaction of the contract installation standards.

Weatherization measures reduce average annual energy costs by $358.00 per dwelling. Alleviation of high energy burden faced by low-income households enables them to gain increased financial independence and flexibility for spending on other essential items, such as medication,
food, gas and rent.
