| STATUS: | MAAC Project is the recipient of American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds from the Department of Health and Human Services for the expansion of the Early Head Start child care program. This position is anticipated to be funded for 2 years. In the event program funding is reduced or eliminated, incumbents in SEIU represented positions will be subject to layoff procedures in a manner consistent with MAAC’s labor contract (currently Article 12, Section 7). Other positions funded by ARRA may be subject to layoff pursuant to MAAC policies and procedures. |
DEFINITION:
Under the direct supervision of the Site Supervisor and the appointed guidance of the teacher, will provide care for infants and toddlers in the assigned group(s) and assist in planning, supervising and implementing the education program within the classroom in accordance with policies, procedures, and philosophy of MAAC Project Early Head Start. Early Head Start is a federally funded program for eligible and special needs children 0 – 3 years and pregnant women.
DUTIES:
- Assist in providing respectful, responsive individualized care for assigned infants and toddlers including feeding, diapering and holding.
- Assist in planning and implementing age appropriate individual and small group activities including both daily indoor and outdoor activities.
- Assist in maintaining classroom and outside play area to assure cleanliness and safety. Set up and clean up of indoor and outdoor play spaces. Sanitizing of toys, and classroom equipment, including eating, diapering and napping area and laundry as needed.
- Assist with preparing and serving meals and snacks.
- Assist with accurate documenting of care and developmental activities on daily individual records for each child.
- Perform accurate numerical counts such as attendance, meal counts and documenting care routines of children.
- Lift, carry, and hold children, weighing up to 25 – 40lbs.
- Assist with home visits at times convenient to parents;
- Assist with the development of Individual Child Plans and Family Development Plans for each child and family at Phase-In, and updating at least 3 times in the school year.
- Develop and maintain an open friendly and informative relationship with parents, and volunteers.
- Attend mandated trainings, programs, conferences and meetings.
- Assist with personalized services for special needs children. (Specialized training and equipment provided as needed.)
Qualifications:
Skills / Knowledge
- Bilingual (English / Spanish) speaking, reading and writing
- Proficient in oral and written English
- Knowledge of basic arithmetic,
- May occasionally be required to work overtime
- Knowledge of child development principles including bilingual language principles preferred.
- Knowledge of Head Start philosophy, principles, and comprehensive services preferred.
Education/Experience
High School diploma or equivalent
1st Preferred Requirement
- State of California Child Development Teacher Permit (24 units) + 3-6 units infant and toddler care and 1 year experience with infants and toddlers (ages 0-3 years of age) in a child care or classroom setting. (Early Head Start Experience preferred)
*Must include core classes, Child Development and Child, Family and Community + 6 units in any curriculum classes plus 6 units Infant/Toddler course work
2nd Preferred Requirement
- State of California Child Development Associate Teacher Permit (12 approved units) + 3 - 6 units infant and toddler care and 1 year experience with infants and toddlers (ages 0-3 years of age) in a childcare or classroom setting. (Early Head Start Experience preferred)
- Must be willing to complete needed infant and toddler units up to a total of 6 units completed within 1 year.
AND
- Valid CPR, First Aid and Food Handlers Cards must be obtained within first two months (2) of employment and maintained throughout employment (paid, designated training available through MAAC Project) In the event employees do not attend the scheduled training, they must obtain the cards through outside resources and costs will not be reimbursed. TRANSPORTATION
Must have a valid California Driver’s License, daily use of personal, insured vehicle, and an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report at time of hire
HEALTH STATUS
Must have an annual physical examination and TB clearance as required by state and federal regulations by a doctor/clinic designated by MAAC Project within seven (7) days of hire for new employees.

BACKGROUND CLEARANCE
California Start law requires background criminal checks on anyone who works in the licensed facility who is not a client. Must have or obtain a current criminal background check clearance, signed criminal record statement, and signed Acknowledgement to Report Child Abuse form prior to employment or first day in facility.
SALARY $9.87 (Step 1) - $10.63 (Step 4) Per hour-Bilingual Pay as outlined in the Union Contract
UNION MENBERSHIP
Social Services Union, Local 221, Service Employees International Union, AFL-CIO. Monthly dues of 1.65% of monthly gross income, minimum of $8.00 per month. Deductions to begin after 30 days of employment.
