Head Start, Early Head Start & State Preschool

MAAC Head Start readies children for success in school while helping their families meet their early childhood education, health and well-being, nutrition and social services needs.

MAAC Head Start, Early Head Start and State Preschool programs deliver the national school readiness program to economically disadvantaged children and their families. Our highly individualized programs integrate a developmentally-appropriate curriculum reflecting the diverse ethnic, cultural and linguistic backgrounds of participating families. Currently, MAAC Head Start serves over 2,000 economically disadvantaged children and their families throughout north San Diego County in the communities of Oceanside, Vista, San Marcos, Escondido and Carlsbad.

Options to Fit Your Family’s Needs

Early Head Start intensifies the focus on children from birth to three years old, addressing concerns including healthy development of infants and toddlers, prenatal care and family support systems.

State Preschool is a low-cost option for families who may exceed income eligibility for MAAC Head Start, but seek a more affordable alternative to private preschool. Children enrolled in State Preschool are integrated into our Head Start classrooms and benefit from the same structured curriculum and services.

Children participating in MAAC Head Start, Early Head Start and State Preschool benefit from a variety of education-based activities that nurture their language and cognitive development, social skills and creativity while offering parents literacy and support services to enhance their productivity and self-sufficiency. Every classroom across our 22 child development centers are structured with specific areas for dramatic play, science, art, sensory exploration, literacy and writing. In addition to providing a wide range of learning opportunities, these centers encourage self-confidence, allow children to express feelings and ideas, and help encourage social skills. Daily activities include large group, small group and individual play time, as well as outdoor activities, family-style mealtimes and personal hygiene.

The benefits of Early Head Start and Head Start outlast the few years children are enrolled in the program; highly individualized attention in the areas of education, early childhood development, health and parent involvement establish a solid foundation to promote well-being and success in school and beyond.
